Training Without a Skull

Fitness and training was really important to me pre-surgery. It was my time to unwind and destress. Given Doug is a personal trainer it was something that we loved doing. Pre-surgery I signed up to F45 and loved it - the classes and people were amazing and it kept me accountable.

After the craniotomy in June 2021 I was able to resume (gradually) to my normal fitness activity over several weeks; however, after the craniectomy when my skull was removed due to infection I struggled to deal with the fact that I couldn't workout like I used to! Doug designed a modified program for me, I had to be careful with lifting weights and fast movements. I couldn't jump, run, walk at the speed I could before or lift heavy weight. I even struggled to lie flat as my head had to be propped up with pillows each night due to the uncomfortable feeling of having no skull. The first time I completed the modified program I was so angry at myself for not being able to workout like I used to. I had to come to terms that this was only temporary.

I am a reflector, I like to take information on, process it and then come out the other side stronger. I do believe that things happen for a reason and this was just another hurdle for me to overcome. My tip to anyone is to trust your body and don't push yourself, things will eventually work out. Each little step is a step closer to the goal.
